East Cambridgeshire is proving to be a hit with new businesses with a rise of over four per cent in the number of firms located in the district in the last year.
During 2006/07, 3350 businesses were officially recorded as VAT registered in East Cambridgeshire by NOMIS who supply labour market statistics; this is up from 3210 in the previous year.
The district has proven popular with business for a variety of reasons: its close proximity to Cambridge and London; the area is an affordable and attractive place to work and the district has an ever-growing skilled workforce with the population continuing to rise. The District Council's Economic Development Team has spent the last year promoting the area as a business location and has worked with commercial agents to attract new businesses. Councillor Ron Bradney, Economic Champion at East Cambridgeshire District Council said: “These figures show that East Cambridgeshire is becoming an increasingly attractive place to do business with more and more companies setting up here. This is the second successive year that we have seen a 4% growth in VAT stocks which proves that East Cambridgeshire is becoming increasingly attractive to both national and international investors. “With our population continuing to increase, one of our main goals is to try and create the employment opportunities to help East Cambridgeshire to be more self-sustaining. It is vital we continue to act as a catalyst for job creation in order for the District to succeed. A recent survey revealed that more and more of us want to work in the area that we live in –we aim to help achieve this.” To view the ECDC Press Release as a .pdf please open it here
